Impressions of Day 1 of EDF2013
The first day of the European Data Forum 2013 (EDF2013) took place today on 09 April 2013 at the Croke Park Conference Center in Dublin, Ireland. Starting at 09.00am the event programme was full of great keynotes and presentations, an executive panel on big data with 6 participants took place as well as tutorials and lots of discussions and networking around European data economy issues.
The event was opened by the 2 general EDF2013 conference chairs Elena Simperl (University of Southampton, UK) and Michael Hausenblas (MapR Technologies/DERI, Ireland) together with Marta Nagy-Rothengass, Head of Unit "Data Value Chain" at European Commission, Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology.
After a Video message by Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission, in charge of the Digital Agenda, there were welcome words to EDF2013 by Roberto Viola, Deputy Director General at European Commission, Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, Prof. Mark Ferguson, Science Foundation Ireland, and Minister Alan Shatter, Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence of Ireland.
This opening session was followed by the European Data Innovator Award Session - the 2013 award was handed over to Michael Gorriz, CIO Daimler by Roberto Viola - the shown award video demonstrated the exceptional vision and execution of Daimler in the field of integrating and leveraging enterprise and/or (linked) open data for a broad range of commercial use cases.
The following EDF2013 Executive Panel on Big Data moderated by Dieter Fensel brought an interesting discussion with the following 6 outstanding participants on challenges and opportunities of Big Data in Europa to the audience of ~ 300 participants:

After these mentioned morning session the EDF2013 followed its programme in 2 parallel tracks giving insights in data challenges and solutions, best practises and in the form of a big data tutorial.
At 19.00pm the EDF2013 conference dinner started at the Croke Park conference center - Marta Nagy-Rothengass held the dinner speech and announced the EDF2014 taking place in Athens, Greece in spring 2014 with general chairs: Manolis Koubarakis (Professor in the Dept. of Informatics and Telecommunications, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and Martin Kaltenböck (Managing Partner & CFO of Semantic Web Company, Vienna, Austria).
After a very successful day 1 of EDF2013 the conference team is looking forward to having an interesting day 2 tomorrow on 10 April 2013!
